About Joshua Mitchell

Joshua Mitchell is currently a Professor of Political Theory at Georgetown University. From 2002-05, he was the Chairman of the Government Department. In 2005, he was on the start-team for Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in Doha, Qatar and has taught courses there periodically for the past 14 years. During the 2008-10 academic years, Dr. Mitchell took leave from Georgetown, and became the Acting Chancellor of The American University of Iraq - Sulaimani (see www.auis.edu.iq).

His research interest lies in the relationship between political thought and theology in the West. His books, Not by Reason Alone: Religion, History, and Identity in Early Modern Political Thought (1993) and The Fragility of Freedom: Tocqueville on Religion, Democracy, and American Future, (1995) were both published by the University of Chicago Press. Another of his books, Plato’s Fable: On the Mortal Condition in Shadowy Times, was published by Princeton University Press in 2006, and his most recent book, Tocqueville in Arabia: Dilemmas in the Democratic Age, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2013.

He has recently completed a book manuscript entitled American Awakening: Identity Politics and Other Perils of Our Time., that will be published in 2020.
